Biographical / Historical

The Institute of Jazz Studies (IJS) was incorporated in 1952 by Marshall Stearns, who donated the Institute and its collections to Rutgers University–Newark in 1966. The IJS became part of Rutgers University Libraries in 1984 and moved to the John Cotton Dana Library in 1994. The mission of the IJS is “to collect, preserve, and make accessible the heritage of jazz, an American art form that has been embraced by the world.” In addition to collections created by Institute employees such as the Jazz oral history sound recordings, IJS holdings include thousands of sound recordings, books, and serial publications; over 300 archival collections, and an artifact collection with hundreds of objects. The IJS acquired many of these collections under the leadership of former IJS Director Dan Morgenstern, former Associate Director Ed Berger, and current Director of Operations Vincent Pelote.
