Newark Star Ledger jazz photographs

Dates

  • 1947-2002 and undated

Scope and Contents

The Newark Star-Ledger jazz photographs document jazz and blues artists who performed in the twentieth- and twenty-first-centuries through publicity photographs from artist representatives, record companies, cultural institutions and film and television production companies. The collection also includes news photographs taken by Star-Ledger photographers and writers, freelance photographers and wire services. Accordingly, many New Jersey and greater New York jazz concerts, festivals and events are featured subjects. The majority of the photographs are black-and-white prints, with fewer color prints, slides and black-and-white negatives.

Of special note are rare photographs of major artists, many in the later parts of their careers, including Count Basie, Benny Carter, Duke Ellington, Tal Farlow, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Lena Horne, Wynton Marsalis, Wayne Shorter, Frank Sinatra and Joe Williams. There is an original AP Wirephoto showing a bloodied Miles Davis from August 1959 when a policeman beat him outside a New York night club.

Many of the photographs contain caption information identifying artists, dates, locations and events. Some captions contain photo credits.
