Scope and Contents
This collection includes handwritten music manuscripts, printed scores, and lead sheets. Among the manuscripts are forty-eight handwritten transcriptions by Sultanoff of arrangements by Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Mary Lou Williams, Benny Carter, Bill Hollman, Tadd Dameron, Neil Hefti, Bob Brookmeyer, Gil Fuller, Manny Albam, and Al Cohn. These include arrangements originally recorded for Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool band, and Charlie Parker's recordings with strings. Printed arrangements include Oliver Nelson's writing for Wes Montgomery. The collection also contains correspondence between Sultanoff and various individuals pertaining to a Sonny Rollins transcription book for Hal Leonard. This includes handwritten correspondence by Rollins, and also includes a cassette tape of Rollins used for the transcriptions. The collection also includes a fakebook by Bill Holman.
