Scope and Contents

This collection contains sheet music, band parts, personal papers, and audio recordings. The recordings consist of 482 audiocassettes, thirty-three CDs, five open reel audiotapes, and six audio discs. The majority of audiocassettes feature live performances of the Elliott Lawrence band and the Howie Mann Big Band. Other recordings feature tributes, memorial services, and dubs of other artists recordings. The audio discs consist of five Woody Herman records and an LP of Elliott Lawrence at the Hollywood Palladium. There are two 16mm moving image films: one of Elliott Lawrence, titled Way Out West and one featuring the Howie Mann Big Band broadcast on television station CBS. The collection also contains five VHS cassettes of jazz festivals in the late 1980s.

The collection includes notated music, published sheet music, arrangements, drum tablature, and instrumental parts organized by folders and binders.

The personal papers include correspondence with Phil Urso, Fred Gretsch Manufacturing Company, Dottie Mann, and other musicians. Also included are newspaper clippings, Elliot Lawrence press, and photographs documenting Mann's career. There is also a Jazz Nexus narrative describing Mann's achievements and materials related to Mann's school performances.
