Scope and Contents
This collection contains materials related to the career of Phil Schaap. It includes correspondence with musicians and fellow enthusiasts, festival and concert programs, press kits, press clippings, demo recordings, manuscript copies of two plays (one about Frankie Manning and one about Lester Young), and professional papers. There are twelve VHS tapes, forty-three CDs, twelve open reel recordings, 104 cassette tapes, and six digital audio tapes in the collection. Notable materials include a Tiny Grimes stamp, audio interviews from 1954 with Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, and Carl Warwick, and resumes from Andrew Hill, Bill Dixon, and Sonny Johnson. A significant portion of the papers are related to Schaap's career at Columbia's WKCR. There is also a box of jazz-related press clippings from various New York City publications.
