Scope and Contents
The Dan Morgenstern papers document the full span of Morgenstern's life and career, from his early years in Vienna through his leadership of the Institute of Jazz Studies. The collection consists of personal and professional papers including correspondence, research notes, manuscripts, liner notes, drafts, review copies, setlists and concert notes, interviews, ephemera, photographs, audio and moving image recordings, datebooks, applications, awards, clippings, souvenirs, contracts, teaching materials, and limited realia. The collection documents Morgenstern's work for magazines including Downbeat, Metronome, and Jazz Journal; includes his book manuscripts, articles, and liner notes; evidences his involvement with the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Satchmo Summerfest, the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, JazzPar, the Starr-Gennett Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts, among other organizations; and provides a record of the vast network of friends, musicians, colleagues, admirers, collaborators, researchers, and other contacts with whom he corresponded and kept in touch. His work as an editor is amply represented, along with his directorship of the Institute of Jazz Studies.
