Scope and Contents
The Bill Hughes collection of Count Basie Orchestra library scores and correspondence consists of an array of scores and professional papers. Series 1 is exclusively made up of scores from the library of the Count Basie Orchestra, and includes holographs, manuscripts, computer printouts, published, and professionally copied scores and parts. Series 2 features correspondence of a professional nature with musicians, conductors, and copyists. In this series can be found scores from business transactions, invoices, clippings, publicity materials, headshots, fliers, technical notes, band library lists, and travel documents, as well as three unmatched drumsticks.

Biographical / Historical
William Henry Hughes (1930-2018) was an American jazz trombonist and served as director of the Count Basie Orchestra (CBO) from 2001 to 2010. His relationship with the band began in the early 1950’s and lasted until his death in 2018. Hughes’ earliest known recorded appearance with the CBO was in 1954.
