Scope and Contents

The Bill Hughes collection of Count Basie Orchestra library scores and correspondence consists of an array of scores and professional papers. Series 1 is exclusively made up of scores from the library of the Count Basie Orchestra, and includes holographs, manuscripts, computer printouts, published, and professionally copied scores and parts. Series 2 features correspondence of a professional nature with musicians, conductors, and copyists. In this series can be found scores from business transactions, invoices, clippings, publicity materials, headshots, fliers, technical notes, band library lists, and travel documents, as well as three unmatched drumsticks.

The Bill Hughes Collection includes musical scores, correspondence, and professional papers documenting the professional life of Bill Hughes and his connection to the Count Basie Orchestra.

Biographical / Historical

William Henry Hughes (1930-2018) was an American jazz trombonist and served as director of the Count Basie Orchestra (CBO) from 2001 to 2010. His relationship with the band began in the early 1950’s and lasted until his death in 2018. Hughes’ earliest known recorded appearance with the CBO was in 1954.

Related Materials

The Institute of Jazz Studies houses the Count Basie family papers and artifacts (IJS-0002), an archival collection comprising the extant papers and personal belongings of the Basie family, including Catherine, Diane, and Count Basie. In addition, the Institute maintains archival materials pertaining to [alums] of the Count Basie Orchestra: Benny Carter, George Duvivier, Joe Newman, Buck Clayton, Butter Jackson, Wild Bill Davison, Manny Albam, Terry Reig. The Institute's Library holds numerous recordings by the Count Basie Orchestra.
