Scope and Contents
The Arts appreciation, advocacy, and management series contains materials O’Brien collected about specific artists and subjects. Individual folders frequently include correspondence, clippings, ephemera, and photography. He retained substantial files on Thelma Carpenter, Ethel Waters, Joan Roberts, and Carl Van Vechten. The Van Vechten material includes photographs of O’Brien and others taken by Van Vechten and Van Vechten books given by the author, among other items. There are also papers related to O’Brien’s management of artist Antonio Salemme and his relationship with Salemme and his family.
