Scope and Contents
Questionnaires used by Feather to compile his Encyclopedia of Jazz (1955), the Encyclopedia Yearbook of Jazz (1956), and possibly the New Yearbook of Jazz (1958). Approximately three different questionnaires are represented, distinguishable only by heading and style; two include the headings "Jazz Encyclopedia Questionnaire" and ". . . Encyclopedia Yearbook of Jazz ." The questionnaires, completed by musicians in their own hand, include the following components: professional and legal name, address, phone number, instruments, birth date, family information, credentials or courses of study, when and how entered music business, bands and combos worked with, overseas work, other jobs, debut in records, personal best recordings, radio/TV/movie appearances, awards, favorite musicians and influences, and additional comments.
Conditions Governing Access
Use and photocopying of the original Encyclopedia of Jazz questionnaires is permitted only when a copy is not available in the IJS biographical files. Use and photocopying of any item in Series II Letters requires the permission of an IJS staff member determined on a case-by-case basis. The unprocessed audiovisual materials in the collection are currently open for visual inspection only. Access copies for listening and/or viewing may be created on request, if possible.
