Scope and Contents
This is an audio from a television broadcast at the Blue Note in 1960. The audio begins with music from a nightclub by pianist Alice McLeod (later Coltrane), with Don King (bass) and Don Brown (drums). First Billie Poole sings "I Can't Rock and Roll to Save My Soul" with Jimmy Gourley (guitar). At 4:13 Mcleod's trio performs "Woody 'N You" by Dizzy Gillespie. Then (7:40) Powell with Pierre Michelot (bass) and Kenny Clarke (drums) performs "Get Happy." At 11:30 Lucky Thompson (tenor saxophone), Alice McLeod (later Coltrane), Jimmy Gourley, Pierre Michelot, and Kenny Clarke perform "Strike Up the Band." At 15:50 Billie Poole sings "The Birth of the Blues" with the McLeod trio. At 19:00 Jimmy Gourley, Henri Renaud (piano), Jean-Marie Ingrand (bass), Daniel Humair (drums) play "How Long Has This Been Going On?" by George Gershwin and "Clara's Blues." Then the announcer introduces the Three Bosses with Powell playing "John's Abbey." The audio ends before the tune begins.
