The collection contains both personal and professional records of Dr. Henry C. Herge.
Subjects in the collection are from his time as Dean of the Graduate School of Education, his work with the Latin American Institute, as well as ephemera from his retirement, and correspondence both as a professional educatorand in his retirement.

Abstract
Dr. Henry C. Herge was appointed Dean of the Graduate School of Education after a long and distinguished career in education, education administration as well as service in the U.S. Navy. He served as Dean from 1953 until 1965 and continued as a faculty member at Rutgers in the Graduate School of Education and the Latin American Institute until his retirement in 1975.
Biographical Sketch
Dr. Henry C. Herge was the Dean of the Graduate School of Education from 1953 to 1964.
Before coming to Rutgers, Herge taught adult students and English from 1927 until 1938 in New York, and held various administrative positions in Nassau County, New York from 1938 to 1942. In 1942 he took a leave due to World War II and became an education officer for enlisted men for the Bureau of Naval Personnel (1942-1943) and then as professor of Military Science and Tactics at Wesleyan University for the remainder of the war. From 1945 to 1946 he was the assistant director for the study on armed services educational programs in the American Council on Education. From 1946 to1953 he served as director of higher education and teacher education and certification for the Connecticut Department of Education. He then obtained the position of Dean of the Graduate School of Education in 1953. In 1965 he continued to be a program associate for Rutgers Center for International Programs and a professor in the Graduate School of Education after his resignation of Dean and until his retirement in 1975. During this time he also directed numerous studies abroad for U.S. aid in Paraguay, Jamaica and Southeast Africa. Upon retirement, Herge and his wife moved to Hilton Head, South Carolina where he ran as the Republican candidate for the Board of Education.
He received numerous citations from the National Conference Christians and Jews, the White House Conference on Education, National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, New Jersey Congress of Parents and Teachers, Directors of Vocational and technical Education, New Jersey Secondary School Teachers Associations, Phi Delta Kappa, Epsilon Pi Tau, Kappa Delta Pi, and was a Fulbright Scholar in 1970.
Herge authored Wartime College Training Programs of the Armed Services (American Council on Education, 1948), “Higher Education” in The Economy of New Jersey (Rutgers University Press, 1958), The College Teacher (Center for Applied Research, 1965), Disarmament in the Western World ed. (Occasional Papers, Latin American Institute, Rutgers University, 1969), Common Concerns in Higher Education: An Italian American Universities Project (National Institute of Education, Washington D.C., 1971) in addition to numerous professional articles.
He died in 2003 at the age of 97 in a retirement community in Atlantic Beach, Florida.
