Scope and Content Note
The folders entitled "Provost's Cabinet Meetings" contain minutes from Meeting No. 1 on July 8, 1953 through Meeting No. 155 on June 14, 1971. Meeting minutes are missing for Meetings No. 117 to 122 and Nos. 125 to 128. The minutes for Meeting No. 33 were not taken due to the absence of the Secretary. Two meetings (February 4 and March 4, 1957) are listed as No. 45. Meeting 53, scheduled for February 1958, was canceled because Mason W. Gross was ill and unable to attend. Although the records suggest the Cabinet met during the 1971-1972 year (there is correspondence regarding the meetings), no minutes from that year were included in the papers that make up this collection. These folders also contain correspondence regarding meeting schedules and agendas, and supplementary materials such as reports.
The folder entitled "Provost's Cabinet" includes a draft revision of recommendations for academic promotion, a research manual, correspondence to new members of the cabinet and about meeting schedules. It also contains material on the Water Resources Research Institute, and a booklet entitled "The Flight from Teaching: Summary of a Discussion by the Trustees of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching."
The "Provost's Cabinet Memoranda" folders contains memoranda from Schlatter concerning issues and topics he would like the cabinet to consider and respond to, including appointment and promotion and budgets.
The "Provost's Cabinet: Committee on University Governance" folder contains correspondence from the Provost and members of the committee. It also includes reports and proposals regarding university governance, such as the committees suggested reorganization for the structure of Rutgers.

Acquisition Note
The folders containing memoranda and Committee on University Governance materials were from the records of the Provost and Vice-President (Richard Schlatter). A folder labeled "Provost Cabinet Minutes" was taken from an unprocessed box of records from the Office of the Provost. However, as this folder was comprised of memoranda from between 1968 and 1971, these materials were incorporated into the "Provost's Cabinet Memoranda" folders. The meeting minutes folders contain material from Schlatter's records and from a box of Provost's Cabinet materials.
Abstract
The Provost's Cabinet was established under Provost Mason W. Gross and continued under Richard Schlatter's tenure until its discontinuance in 1972. The records in this collection consist mainly of meeting minutes and reports. The collection contains minutes from Meeting No. 1 on July 8, 1953 through Meeting No. 155 on June 14, 1971. It also includes correspondence and material from the Provost's Cabinet Committee on University Governance.
<emph render="bold">Administrative History</emph>
The Provost's Cabinet was established by President Lewis Webster Jones in 1953 as part of a major rearrangment of administrative offices at Rutgers. Jones stated that the university's provost, Mason W. Gross would preside over the cabinet, whose members would consist of the dean of each school, the Dean of Administration, the directors of the Institute of Microbiology, Admissions, and Research, along with the University Librarian. Jones stated that the cabinet would be responsible for "the educational administration of the University," and that the Provost would "take leadership in the preparation of the educational budget in close cooperation with the Deans and Directors and the Coomptroller of the University." (1) In the cabinet's second meeting, Jones stated that he specifically wished the cabinet to focus on appointments and promotions, budget making, and the administration of the colleges that made up Rutgers. (2)
The Provost's Cabinet first met biweekly, and then monthly during the academic year. The meetings continued under Richard Schlatter's tenure as Provost from 1962 to 1971. As new deans and directors were appointed, they became members of the Provost's Cabinet. The minutes indicate that the number of members increased from eighteen in 1953 to twenty-eight in 1971, with some fluctuation in between, reflecting the changes of the administration at Rutgers between those years.
The Provost's Cabinet was discontinued in 1972, at a time when Rutgers was going through a reorganization under a new president, Edward J. Bloustein. The University Provost's position was replaced in March 1972 by provosts for New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden. The New Brunswick Provost continued meeting with the New Brunswick Deans under the name of "Deans Meeting with the New Brunswick Provost," which after four meetings in the fall of 1972 became the "Provost's Council of Deans."
