Scope and Contents

The Rutgers Athletics Department Collection consists of four series, the Peace Corps Training Files, the Class of 1916 Files, the Foster Sanford Files, and Ephemera Files. The Rutgers Athletics Department Collection of Harry Rockafeller consists of 0.4 cubic feet of papers and photographs housed in 1 manuscript box. The collection spans the years between 1942 and 1971. A portion of the collection reflects Harry Rockafeller’s role as the administrator of the Peace Corps-Columbia CARE training program that took place at Rutgers in 1961. Another portion of the collection reflects Rockafeller’s role as president of the class of 1916. The majority of theses papers are correspondence that spans the dates between 1942 and 1961. Another portion of the collection are the correspondence, photographs, magazine articles, and administrative materials Rockafeller used to plan the Rutgers memorial service of football coach Foster Sanford. The materials span the dates between 1950 and 1954.

Abstract

Harry J. Rockafeller was a Rutgers alumnus, coaching staff member and, director of the athletics department. This collection is a byproduct of his activities as staff member and as president of the Rutgers University graduating class of 1916.

Biographical / Historical

Harry J. Rockafeller was a Rutgers alumnus and coaching staff member and later director of the athletics department. As a student he was the president of the class of 1916. Rockafeller returned to Rutgers to coach football from 1927 to 1930. Foster Sanford preceded Rockafeller as football coach from 1913-1923. As a staff member in the athletics department, Rockafeller was charged with planning a memorial service and luncheon at Rutgers honoring Sanford, who died in 1938. Rutgers won a bid to host the Columbia-CARE Peace Corps training program in 1961. Rockafeller administered the athletic training and evaluation of male Peace Corps volunteers during the summer of 1961.

II. Class of 1916 Files

III. Foster Sanford Files

IV. Ephemera Files

The Peace Corps Training Files series is divided into four subseries, A. Correspondence, B. Memorandum, C. Physical Fitness Records, and D. Program Information. The subseries are arranged alphabetically and chronologically. The Peace Corps Training Files span a date range of 1961-1971. The papers consist of Harry Rockafeller’s administrative correspondence and memoranda produced in planning and implementing the Peace Corps Columbia-CARE program and his records of physical aptitude tests given to Peace Corps candidates.

The Class of 1916 Files series is divided into two subseries, A. Correspondence, and B. Financial. The subseries are arranged alphabetically and chronologically. The files span a date range of 1942-1961. They consist of papers that are the byproduct of Harry Rockafeller’s role as president of the class of 1916, which resulted in his duty of planning class reunions, the majority of the files being Rockafeller’s correspondence with his former classmates.

The Foster Sanford Files series is divided into four subseries, A. Administrative, B. Correspondence, C. Financial, and D. Published Material. The subseries are arranged alphabetically and chronologically. The Foster Sanford Files span a date range of 1950-1954. They consist of published materials about Sanford collected by Harry Rockafeller in order to plan Sanford’s memorial service at Rutgers and administrative papers that are a byproduct of planning the event, including an inked map of Room 115 of the Rutgers gymnasium that was drawn in 1954.

The Ephemera Files consists of a brochure produced by a Florida poultry company.

Processing Information

The Rutgers Athletics Department Collection of Harry Rockafeller was preliminarily processed as a class project for the Manuscripts and Archives class offered as part of the Master's in Library and Information Science program at Rutgers. The students in this class refoldered, and arranged and described the contents of individual manuscript boxes. The processor examined the original folder order and divided the collection into four series and arranged the collection alphabetically and chronologically. Original order was maintained whenever the date could not be determined. The collection is organized in 23 folders.
