Biographical / Historical

The Network for Family Life Education (NFLE) was founded shortly after the New Jersey State Board of Education passed a legislative mandate in August 1980 requiring elementary and secondary school to teach courses in family life education. Two month later, Rutgers University’s Department of Community Education sponsored a conference, “A New Jersey Public Issues Conference – Family Life Education and the Community: Focus on New Jersey”, where both professional and community representatives expressed the strong need in communities for clarification and understanding of the family life education mandate.

In response to this need, a New Jersey Network for Family Life Education was organized by representatives from 20 public and private New Jersey agencies with a statewide scope. It was set up as an informal and voluntary system for sharing information and encouraging the development of community level family life education programs. It would also act as a mechanism to share resources and best practices regarding programs and activities as well as information about federal, state, and local actions related to family life education. At its formation, it was the only coalition of its kind in the country.

Initial funding from the Fund for New Jersey and aid from the Huber and South Branch foundations made it possible to establishment a central office in the Center for Community Education at the Rutgers School of Social Work. It would serve as the Network’s resource center, providing program information, printed materials, and speakers. In 1982, after the office was established, Roberta Knowlton was hired as Executive Coordinator. Knowlton established a resource center for family life education programming. In 1984, Susan N. Wilson, a former member of the State Board of Education, and one of the original network advisors, became Executive Coordinator in 1984. She established new programs to aid educators and promote family life education, and coordinated the Coalition for Comprehensive Family Life and Sexuality Education. The coalition included Network members and other statewide organizations, and advocated against “stress abstinence” legislation in the State Assembly and State Senate from 1988 to 2002. In 2005, Danene Sorace took over as executive director and the organized was renamed "Answer."

She received her Master’s Early Childhood Education from Princeton in the mid-1960s. From 1977 to 1982, she served on the State Board of Education. In 1981, she helped found the Family Life Education Network, where she worked until 2004. She was an advocate for sexuality education, and the motivating force behind New Jersey’s K-12 mandate for inclusive sexuality education.
