Scope and Contents
Summary: This series contains photostatic copies of documents obtained by Rutgers professor David Cowen for his research on medical education. They consist of additional manuscript letters from collections at New York Public Library, particularly the John W. Francis papers, 1813-1830; extracts of minutes of the New York State Regents, 1825-1826; minutes of the Board of Trustees of Queen's and Rutgers College, 1792, 1812, and 1826; copies of the two New York State Supreme Court decisions regarding licensing of medical practice and medical degrees, 1830. This series also includes a copy of David D. Demarest's Rutgers (Queen's) College and Medical Degrees (1894) and several journal articles (1959-1973) on Nicholas Romayne, David Hosack, George Bushe, and Asa Fitch, a student at the Rutgers Medical College who recorded his experiences in a journal.
