II. Papers of Dean Harry G. Owen, 1952-1965

Scope and Contents

This series contains the correspondences and papers of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Harry G. Owen. The majority of the information concerns the English department however there are some documents included which concern the Science department. The two Chairman that Owen corresponded with were J. Milton French and Rudolf Kirk who served as acting Chairman. Harry G. Owens files contain memos and correspondences from administration and faculty. Topics covered include budgetary concerns, instructions and procedures for faculty concerning University policy, statistics, and concerns of administration, faculty, and students.

Contained herein are a wide range faculty issues: letters of recommendations; their research; grading issues; budgetary concerns; and various requests from the faculty including money for physical expansion of the English department and requests for materials; reappointments; sabbatical; grants; teaching loads to name a few. Student issues contained in these files include: students on the deans list for the year, scholarship and assistantship information; lists of honor students, scholarships awarded to students, commencement information; information on freshman orientation, summer reading lists and panels, testing for freshman placement; correspondences with teaching assistants, issues with students including rampant reported student absences and lists of failing students among others. Correspondence is primarily with French and Kirk.
