Scope and Contents
This series contains Faculty Load Estimates for the English Department, copies of the Final Exams given by the English Department, grades, grading procedures and records of the Registrars. The Faculty Load Estimates for the English Department were forms filled out by the faculty members containing the instructors name, rank, salary, semester, year, the title of the course(s), section number(s), and number of students per class. The number of classes taught varied from one to as many as six. Faculty included professors, assistant professors, visiting professors, associate professors, graduate assistants, lecturers and teaching assistants. Salaries for each individual varied. Other information included teaching hours per section, lab. or conference hours per section, average hours spent in preparation per class section, average hours spent reading papers, exams, etc. per class section, and a grand total of hours spent doing all of the above. Also included on each form are the total hours spent teaching, conducting research, performing administrative duties and other University responsibilities. The copies of the Final Examinations from 1954 to 1960 contain midterms, make-up exams, and exams given during the summer session. All tests include essay questions, some short answer or a combination of both. Professor's names are not always printed on the test and some exams only have the class name and section number. The Grades of the English Department contain statistical information, grade distribution, account of losses/drops, lists of courses, analysis of final grades, instructions for professors on grading procedures and how to submit grades to the registrars office. Grades range from 1 (highest) to 5 (lowest). The Registrar's records from 1963 to 1965 include memos sent to faculty: primarily Deans, Department Chairs and Administrative Offices concerned. Also included are letters from faculty members regarding getting credit for conferences, pre-registration and registration procedures and instructions for undergraduate and graduate students given to faculty for for advising purposes, cover letters and instructions addressing discrepancies that came with class rosters, procedures for handling students who are not on the class roster, instructions for reporting final grades, and instructions on how to make change grade from a T-grade to a number grade.
