Scope and Contents

Summary: Files pertaining to the Agreement Between Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey and Rutgers Council of the American Association of University Professors Chapter, 1999-2003. In this contract bargaining topics included grievance procedures, sabbaticals, salaries and merit pay, parking, faculty dismissal, teaching assistant and graduate assistant pay and part-time health benefits, faculty service to the RCAAUP, intellectual property, the place of department chairs in the bargaining unit and their compensation, early retirement, bargaining unit recognition, and parenting leave. The bulk of the documents are correspondence and memoranda; additional document types are publications, proposals, contractual articles, petitions, press releases, bargaining notes, surveys, ballots, and a contract.

In May 1999 a survey went out to faculty regarding the administration's initial salary offer; the faculty overwhelmingly rejected it, commenting on the lack of a cost of living salary increase, the need for money for graduate students, and the problems of merit pay. The final contract ballot went out two months later, in July, and was accepted by the faculty.

The folder "Post-Contract Demands for Negotiation, 1999" corresponds to material elsewhere referred to as the Wintersession demand for negotiations.

The folders "Notes/Reports, 1998-1999" are analogues to the minutes in other contract cycles.
