Summary: Files pertaining to the Agreement Between Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey and Rutgers Council of the American Association of University Professors Chapter, 1983-1986. Topics include salaries and merit pay, grievance procedures, parking, special salary scales, the creation of named professorships, salary rollbacks, reduction in force procedures, personnel files, promotion procedures, workload, teaching assistant workloads, non-discrimination, and the protection of union and political activities. The documents consist of correspondence and memoranda, minutes, proposals, handwritten notes, surveys, articles, press releases, publications, legal documents, and a contract.

During the negotiations for this contract, Rutgers University faced uncertain state funding, and special RCAAUP-Administration bargaining meetings occurred in order to address issues related to the problem of salary funding from the state and the possibility of salary cuts or rollbacks. However, Rutgers University was simultaneously endeavoring to create an internationally renowned faculty, and this contract witnessed the formal creation of special salary scales for disciplines with a high market value. These files include the some of the earliest negotiations for out-of-cycle procedures and special salary scales.

Note on retention: The "Bargaining Book" originally consisted of 18 files that formed a chronology of bargaining. The bulk of the material consisted of minutes, which were discarded as redundant, leaving five folders of documents.
