Scope and Contents

Although the records span from 1921 to 1973, there is a break from 1937 to 1954, and also for the year 1957; no records of the budget are present for these time periods. Often found in a budget folder is a copy of the previous year's budget, as well as comparisons between Douglass College and Rutgers College or other schools' budgets for reference in preparing the Douglass College budget. Computer print-outs (i.e. monthly budget reports) start appearing in 1964 and continue until the end of the series.

For convince, all records have been labelled "Budget", except special folders (see folder list for examples). The early records labelled "Budget" can include any or all of the following: correspondence within and outside of Douglass College, salary adjustments (pay roll lists), income and expenditure reports, and various scribblings and worksheets from the Dean.

The later records, 1958-1973, are mostly separated into two categories -- Administrative Departments and Educational Departments. Folders labelled "Administrative" cover a very broad spectrum of material, such as correspondence between Rutgers University and Douglass College, inter-departmental correspondence at Douglass, and justifications of budget requests. Also included is general information such as form letters, tables, and charts. Departments considered Administrative include Associate Alumnae, College Center, Financial Aid, Health Center, Library, Placement Bureau, Secretary to the College, and others. The "Educational Department" folders consist of the basic academic departments of Douglass College (sometimes including the Graduate School), ranging from American Studies to Sociology.

Arrangement

Arranged chronologically by year of budget, however, the material within each folder can cover a much broader time period. Within each folder, the correspondence is arranged chronologically for all the records; for the later records arrangement is also alphabetical by department.
