III. Faculty and Administrative Recruitment

Scope and Contents

Description:This series consists of records relating to the recruitment of academic personnel, either in an administrative capacity or by various academic departments. For the records in Boxes 13-16, the records are filed alphabetically, by department, and within each department by candidate's last name. The records in most of the files in this series are arranged chronologically from earliest to most recent date. Box 16 contains two categories, first, records pertaining to the recruitment of Administrative personnel, arranged alphabetically by administrative function, and within administrative function, by candidate name. The second grouping of general Candidates, not classified by function, is arranged alphabetically by the candidate's last name, with the materials pertaining to each individual arranged chronologically. The majority of the Faculty and Administrative Recruitment files are copies, with the bulk of these documents consisting of correspondence, meeting arrangements, resumes, dossiers, transcripts, recommendations, publications and writing samples. Handwritten notations can also be found among this series. Some of the folders relating to departments, in particular, Biology and Comparative Literature, have correspondence and reports regarding the philosophy, courses, and direction of the department.

Arrangement

Arrangement:Records have been re-organized into an alphabetical arrangement, including academic departments, administrative recruitment and general candidates, and within each category by the candidate's last name, with the materials pertaining to each individual arranged chronologically, from earliest to latest date, unless otherwise stated. As arranged on accession of the collection, these records were identified as Departmental and Academic Discipline Files, with the note that they pertained mainly to recruitment of faculty. The original order was administrative, then academic departments, general candidates and again academic departments. Where possible, records of candidates that were not hired as employees of Livingston College or who had no personal tied to Dean Lynton were removed from the boxes and discarded. The criteria used to determine those not hired were (a) letter in file saying there were no openings available or rejection letters, and (b) resumes with no further correspondence, meeting plans or the like, which would have indicated interest in the candidate.
