Scope and Contents

(Diary 9. Black with green lettering.) Burks tours Japan with Jane. Of interest is a meeting with Morito Tatso, President of Hiroshima and a member of Japan National committee for UNESCO. They discuss Hiroshima orphanages and Burks makes his first public address in Japanese. Burks writes of the upcoming election and his decision to spend Christmas in Japan. Jane conducts research of Japanese schools. Page 193 offers noteworthy comments about a dinner invitation by a distinguished professor, Dr. Takahara. He writes, "Dr. Takahar has a slave wife who was not allowed to eat with us. The Japanese cannot be very democratic until they treat their women as equals."
