(Diary 5. Black leather.) From Washington, DC, Burks begins work as an assistant economist assigned to air intelligence division of the air corps. He works for Captain Calmolm Moss of the air estimates unit and studies manufacturing plants in Japan. He begins work on general surveys of Japan. Noteworthy are his comments on the economic and industrial significance of bombing operations. Later that year he joins a small but strategic unit responsible for current intelligence map divisions and photo interpretation. Burks enjoys the responsibility of integrating material to make it mean something.
