Scope and Contents
Summary: This series contains material concerning Burks's involvement in organizations and academic endeavors. Said activities included promoting the ties between New Jersey and Japan through the Sister State, City, and University programs and attendant activities; organizing conferences both within and external to Rutgers University; and active membership in organizations such as the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), and the New Jersey Association of Colleges and Universities (NJACU). The bulk of the documents are correspondence. Additional document types include newspaper articles, press releases, meeting minutes, newsletters, memoranda, grant searches, and event programs.
Material of interest includes documents on the dismissal of Rutgers' professors Heimlich, Finley, and Glasser during the McCarthy era, and on the New Jersey loyalty oaths in the 1950s (found in the AAUP files).
