Scope and Contents
Summary: The records in this series document Meisler's career with the Department Store Employees Union Local No. 21 of the Retail Clerks International Association, the Association of Labor Mediation Agencies, and the New Jersey State Board of Mediation. This series also contains information pertaining to the Bamberger Union Contract. These include clippings, copies of photos of checks issued to Elizabeth Carberry and Ruth Jacobus for back pay and press releases about the new Bamberger Union Contract. The series contains correspondence pertaining to Meisler's membership in the American Arbitration Association, New Jersey State Board of Mediation, and the New York Expedited Arbitration Panel. Also included are newsletters from Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution (SPIDR), Local 21, the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights (titled Equal Opportunities), Rutgers Labor Alumni Association, and Labor Reports. Correspondents include Rutgers University President Mason W. Gross, New Jersey Governors William T. Cahill and Brendan Byrne, U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Margaret Teringer of The Home News, Robert C. Garnier of the Wisconsin Chapter of Industrial Relations Research Association, Lyle E. Lauterbach and Mitchel Hill, International Representative of the Pennsylvania Organizing Committee.
This series contains documents pertaining to the Local 21 RCIA. Minutes of the Executive Board Meetings, Membership Meetings, and Executive Officer's Report, as well as press releases relating to Meisler's reelection as President; and contract agreements, speeches, and an affidavit concerning the employees' contract at the Lerner Shops. There are also personal records regarding Meisler's graduation from the Thomas A. Edison College.
Also included in this series are documents pertaining to the history of the Retail Clerks Movement as well as the Retail Clerks International Association Study Team, which traveled to Africa, Japan, and Great Britain to introduce labor education assistance.
