Scope and Contents

Summary: The Writings series contains drafts, articles, and speeches Abernethy and correspondence about these pieces. These include an article Abernethy hoped to publish, entitled "Private Johnson Goes to Town" about the treatment of African American soldiers in the United States at that time (during World War II). Another folder contains drafts and correspondence about "At Home to Students" a booklet Abernethy coauthored with his wife about entertaining students, something the Abernethys did at their open houses. (For a copy of the booklet, see Abernethy's biographical file in Special Collections and University Archives, R-BIO Faculty: Abernethy, Bradford S.) Other writings include sermons, speeches to incoming freshemen. Topics range from race relations to peace in the world, and the nature of religion. Occasionally, Abernethy noted where an article was published. This series also contains research material for the speeches.
