Scope and Contents

Summary: The Chapel Files series consists of materials related to Abernethy's day-to-day running of Kirkpatrick Chapel. This series includes Sunday Service Chapel Programs from 1941 until 1972. The "Chapel Preachers and Speakers" files contain correspondence documenting Abernethy's arrangements to have guest speakers for the Sunday service, sometimes needing to make arrangements more than a year in advance.

The folders referring to financing and funds document how Abernethy managed funds used to pay for Chapel needs such as flowers, robes, and music. The Chapel Services Expense Fund drew from three endowments and paid for flowers, dry cleaning, the choir, the ushers' annual dinner, entertaining, printed programs, and music for the chapel. The Bergen Income, refers to the Rebecca M. Bergen Memorial Fund, which was used to pay honoraria for chapel speakers. The Chapel Fellowship Fund paid for chapel supplies, but was also used for donations and aid to students wishing to participate in exchanges and programs.
