Part II: Pages 41-66
Scope and Contents
Kindre's entries in this folder begin with a ride to Naples in a new Ford given to the Company. "What memories that ride brought back--a smooth-riding car, complete with radio--a large city, well-dressed civilians on the streets." On the beachhead, the shelling hit, and disturbed the cemetery plots there. On March 31th, Kindre was asked to escort an officer prisoner to Casablanca, which he did in April. The day before, however, he was making plans for a Rutgers reunion of alumni in Italy, which was encouraged by Old Queens.
A note of Axis propaganda was made, as Kindre heard Sally on the radio, who would list the American and British POWs captured on the beachhead. He also had a chance to see Irving Berlin perform in "This is the Army" in the San Carlo Opera House on April 6, 1944.
On April 9, 1944, Kindre boarded the Elizabeth Stanton ship to sail to Oran (escorting the prisoner). The majority of men aboard were on their way home to America. Kindre states that he would rather go home with his division so that he would not be placed in a replacement center. The ship entered Oran on April 14th, and Kindre stayed in a hotel acquisitioned for American G.I.'s. It was a "life of ease" there, was he slept on a mattress, and had running water. Kindre hooked up with the Red Cross tours, and visited Medina on April 21st, but he notes that he was starting to get feel homesick, was tired of being broke and sick of the city life.
On May 2, 1944, Kindre was on his way back to Italy aboard a ship, along with a "green" medical staff, who questioned him profusely about his experience in war and of Italy. He stated "I feel like an old man who's been overseas for 10 years." The ship docked on May 6th, and thus, his diary ended.
