Scope and Contents

This part of the diary begins July 19, 1943. Kindre's first entry is a description of the cemetery in Gafsa, and the death of 800 Arabs who were buried there. He also repeats a conversation he had with French Master Sergeant Robert Donat Hilary Jr, whose father-in-law was in a Nazi work camp, and who personally served 8 months in a Nazi prison camp in Austria.

On December 24, 1943, Kindre describes the planning of the Officers' party for Christmas, and how they gathered their needs in Alife. Christmas was itself quiet, as the men attended mass and played softball. However, his subsequent diary entries began to become more detailed. For example, several notes were made of the events surrounding him, such as General Roosevelt visiting in Prata; Butterfly anti-personnel bombs hitting the 34th Quarter Master in Venafro; the ruins and ancient underground vaults where men were found hiding; the beginning of the battle in Cassino; the Cairo Conference; the new GI Bill being introduced; troop movements and rumors of being sent home.

Several other entries about the war continued in January. Kindre notes a typhus epidemic that put Naples "off limits" on January 14th; a dogfight between "Jerries" on an American bomber group and fighter escorts on January 16th, which led to the first casualties (wounded, due to fragments of fight) in his company since they had been overseas. Also, Kindre notes that the battle in Cassino "is slow and bloody" (page 18), while the amphibious landings began in Anzio on January 23rd. Kindre describes what the battle area looked like, but how it looked "as if the ugliness of war had never touched it" (page 20) when he looked back as the company was moving out of the area (Naples).

Other personal entries made in this section were of his participation in Court Marshal cases (i.e. King case), and his discussion with his friend Mac of their plans after the war. He stated that such talk "Reminds me of the good old days" (page 15).
