Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Summary: The records in this series are broken down into the subseries American Arbitration Association, National University Extension Association (NUEA) Committee on Workers Education, and Rutgers University. These records primarily document Vertrees' career and relation to various organizations associated with Rutgers. These include complete course outlines in the form of Vertrees' personal teaching notebooks. Additionally, this series contains course enrollment forms for the Extension Division of Rutgers, with a brief summary of each of the courses offered. Too, there is a proposal penned by Vertrees for the necessity of the SMLR (formerly IMLR) Summer Institute. Also contained in this series is the official policy for the SMLR which was adopted by the State Advisory Council on 24 September 1963. In all of the documents contained in this series Vertrees is quite adamant about the necessity to educate corporate executives on how to oversee the labor population in a manner that will be most efficient and effective for maintaining a happy worker population and raising profit levels for the company.

This series also features some official documents from the American Arbitration Association, an organization where Vertrees often served as arbitrator of the Voluntary Labor Arbitration Tribunal. Included with these documents are decisions that Vertrees rendered as well as official union agreement booklets which often helped him render his decisions.

Other documents in this series include speeches Vertrees gave at the various labor meetings, conferences, and courses that he attended and sometimes led. Some of these documents also contain details of event proceedings.
