Scope and Contents
Summary: This series consists mainly of official reports written by Vertrees to executives of companies where he worked as an employment manager or at the head of the human resources department. Companies and institutions represented in the series include the Tide Water Oil Company, Western Telegraph Union Company, and the Vocational Guidance Bureau/Re-Employment Bureau of New York City. Many of these reports feature charts, graphs and memoranda on subjects ranging from pensions and insurance to employee absenteeism, attendance, and turnover rates. One memo in particular, "A Statement of the Problems of Vocational Guidance," documents the ties between Vertrees' teachings and relief work during the Depression. Like other items in the series it underscores Vertrees' concern with the plight of workers and his interest in labor reforms. In addition to reports, the series also includes personal and professional correspondence, meeting minutes, and company newsletters.
