Scope and Contents
Summary: This series consists mainly of letters relating to Vertrees teaching foremen training courses in various corporations primarily throughout New Jersey and New York and some other locations. Numerous letters detail the immense satisfaction that managers experienced as a result of being instructed by Vertrees. They specify how Vertrees' teachings helped bring management and labor together to create a more harmonious and well-run work environment. Along the same lines, copious numbers of managers requested copies of literature that Vertrees used in his courses, some of which was written by Vertrees himself.
Several letters from 1932 discuss the Depression and how the economy had not affected the plans of industrial leaders to have their managers enroll in training courses such as those Vertrees taught. However, one letter, dated July 1932, to Vertrees from the President of Rutgers stated that as a result of the Depression three classes at SMLR would have to be cancelled.
Additionally, there is a host of letters where associates of Vertrees ask him for help with getting their children into Rutgers. Other letters discuss Vertrees' relations to various unions throughout the country, mostly asking him to speak or attend meetings and conferences held by unions or corporations. There a fair amount of letters devoted to the subject of communism and its relation to industry and unions. Of particular note is a letter from 31 August 1948 in which Vertrees offers his explanation as to why communism is so popular in the United States.
