Scope and Contents
Summary: Like the preceding series, materials include typed and handwritten letters, copies of reports, contracts, applications, data sheets related to one of Grob's publications, postcards, news clippings, a six-leaf booklet about the Ray Allen Billington Award, curricula vitae, carbon copies and photocopies of other documents, and various other memoranda.
Two major correspondents within this series are Rutgers University President Edward J. Bloustein and Provost Kenneth Wheeler. Such correspondence deals primarily with the reorganization of the University and the tension between the central administration and the confederation of individual colleges. With Wheeler, Grob also discusses the role of history and the History Department at Cook College. Correspondence with additional members of the university includes Grob's request for a transfer from Livingston College to Cook College, noting "concurrence of both Douglass and Livingston History Departments." A follow-up letter from Grob composed in 1972 mentions his transfer to the Douglass history department and implies he had already received the transfer to Cook College. In later correspondence, Grob shares his thoughts on the Institute of Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research on the College Avenue campus to which he transferred from Douglass.
Several letters within this series also mention Grob's leave of absence from the university to pursue his own research. The correspondence mentions Grob on leave in 1973, again from 1975 to 1976 for an ACLS fellowship, in 1980 for a Guggenheim Fellowship, in 1981 for a residency with the Rockefeller Foundation, and in 1985 for a semester fellowship with the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies. Correspondence between Grob and librarians, archivists, and editors regarding research and manuscript work on his Edward Jarvis and Adolph Myers projects is also present in this series.
Letters to and from politicians including Senator Harrison Williams, Senator Orrin Hatch, and governors Cahill and Byrne are also included within this series.
