Dates

  • 1952-1970

Scope and Contents

Summary: Correspondence between Grob and Dr. Karl Menninger forms a significant portion of the series. Much of the correspondence regards the reprinting of an article written by Grob entitled "Origins of the State Mental Hospital" as well as the reprinting of additional publications by Grob. The correspondence also includes discussion of Grob presenting lectures on the history of psychiatry at the Menninger Foundation.

Much of the correspondence within this series relates to Gerald Grob's advancement as professor of American history and department chair at Clark University, as well as his concerns about faculty policy. Professional correspondence also includes research on both Edward Jarvis and Adolph Myers, letters soliciting recommendations, historical society requests, invitations to attend colloquiums, and information related to Grob's receiving a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for his work on the history of mental hospitals in the United States. The series also includes personal correspondence with friends and colleagues.

Materials include handwritten and typed letters, postcards, minutes, telegrams, news clippings, grant applications, assessments of manuscripts and articles for journals, copies of questionnaires (one filled out by Grob himself), a legal document related to a land purchase by Grob, a copy of a contract, a placard, and an assortment of additional memoranda.
