Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Summary: This series documents student and faculty activities in the fight against apartheid in South Africa and for divestiture of University funds from companies doing business in South Africa. Most of the material in this series was generated by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the Joint Investment Committee, Rutgers University Board of Governors (BOG), and the University Senate. Includes accounts of University common stock invested in corporations doing business in South Africa, clippings chronicling events in South Africa and the concerns and activities of Rutgers students and faculty fighting against apartheid and for divestment, correspondence, informational material, company investment records, legislation, opinion pieces, press releases, reports, including the student and faculty compilation, General Report to the Board of Governors and Board of Trustees, resolutions, and testimonies given by student activists Chris Berzinski and Sue Kozel before various University committees.

The subseries Coalition in Solidarity with South Africa (CISSAL), 1977-1978, contains material on the Rutgers student organization, (of which Chris Berzinski was a member), opposed to apartheid and concerned with the divestiture of University funds from corporations doing business in South Africa. Material on CISSAL includes biographies, broadsides, legislation from New Jersey and Wisconsin, opinion pieces by Chris Berzinski, an outline by Chris Berzinski showing his CISSAL activities and asking to have them be made part of his field work, a petition, press releases and publications. This subseries documents the origins of CISSAL; how it evolved from the Phil Shinnick Defense Committee, focusing on one faculty member's cause, into its pro-divestiture identity.

The University Senate Investment Advisory Committee (IAC), 1979-1988 (1985-1986) subseries documents the Rutgers organization mandated to monitor the activity of U.S. companies doing business in South Africa and their affiliation and/or association with Rutgers. This subseries includes correspondence, reports and resolutions. Student activist Sue Kozel was IAC chairperson in 1985.

The Rutgers Coalition for Total Divestment (RCTD)/Coalition for Total Divestment, (also referred to as the Coalition for Total Divestment), 1985 subseries documents the student, faculty, and alumni organization committed to the divestiture of University funds from corporations doing business in South Africa and the fight against apartheid. This subseries includes broadsides, correspondence, an informational packet concerning the group and a hunger strike, press releases and resolutions.

The subseries University Senate, 1973-1986, documents the examination of Rutgers and divestiture which took place in the University Senate in general. Material includes correspondence, meeting minutes, motions and resolutions.
