Abstract

Firm of sugar merchants in New York City known as Yznaga & Etulain from 1850 until November 1854, when the name was changed to Yznaga del Valle & Co. In addition to company business, the records include some information about financial transactions of Yznaga de! Valle family members. Records, consisting of indexed letter books, June-November 1860 (mostly Spanish; a few signed J. Yznaga del Valle), July 1862-September 1865 (English; most signed with company name per a Mr. Cobb) and July 1872-May 1880 (Spanish and English; a few signed by A. Yznaga del Valle), all containing copies of letters sent (3 v.); letters received, 1855 (1 letter), January-March 1856, July 1856-September 1860 and 1874 (1 letter); personal account ledgers, 1861-1878 (2 v.); journals, November 1854-July 1861 and November 1874-December 1878 (2 v.); a daybook, March 14, 1871-December 31, 1878; ledger C, 1872-1879; cash books D-E, January 1869-December 1878 (2 v.); accounts of melado, molasses and sugar shipped and stored, August 1857-September 1858, in a volume with other accounts, 1857-1859 and undated; a commission invoice book, 1858-1861; receipt books, August 1850-August 1862 and April 1865-February 1881 (9 v.); an insurance book, December 1860-December 1866, recording policy endorsements relating to shipments of goods insured with Great Western Insurance Company; used American Exchange National Bank checkbooks, December 1868-September 1871 and July 1873-December 1874, with transactions recorded on surviving stubs (2 v.); and a letter book, March 1860-June 1865, regarding Tunas & Santo Espiritu Rail Road Co., a family concern in Cuba for which Yznaga del Valle & Co. acted as agent. Accompanying the records is an indexed letter book, May 1856-November 1859 (mostly English), of Antonio Yznaga del Valle concerning Ravenswood Plantation in Louisiana, which produced cotton. Some of the letters received are addressed to Antonio Yznaga del Valle and not to the firm. The letters were written by persons in the United States (including from New York City and state), in the Caribbean (at least from Cuba) and in Europe (including from Paris, France).

Bindings on most volumes deteriorated.

Almost all letters received are pasted, in a somewhat overlapping fashion, to strips of paper ca. 16 inches long that were once joined at the gutter of one or more large volumes. Some of the letters (which include integral address information) never had separate envelopes; for the remaining letters, the envelopes are missing.
