Abstract

The Feminist Art Project Collection documents the various strategies and activities the project utilizes to create and foster a feminist art community. The collection has one series, General Records, which contains documents from the online calendar of events, exhibition announcements and other various materials received from artists, and feminist art ephemera.

Historical Sketch

The Feminist Art Project (TFAP) was founded in 2006 through the Center for Women in the Arts and Humanities at Rutgers University (previously known as the Center for Women in the Arts, and previously known as the Institute for Women and the Arts). TFAP celebrates the Feminist Art Movement which began in the late 1960s: its history, its legacy and its continuation in contemporary terms. TFAP also acts as an "intervention against the ongoing erasure of women from the cultural record."

TFAP utilizes four avenues to create, celebrate, and foster feminists in the arts. First is by hosting a calendar of events on their website. The calendar lists international and national exhibitions, lectures, call for artists, film screenings, and miscellaneous events that touch on feminism in the arts. Second, TFAP creates a day of feminist art discussion panels at CAA conference. These panels vary widely on topic, and can all be seen on their website: The Feminist Art Project . Topics like transwomen and feminism, age, and intersectionality have all been issues discussed at the CAA. The panels bring together artists, scholars, critics, and newbies to discuss topics in feminist art. Third, TFAP creates educational resources including books lists and lesson plans for adults and K-12 students can be found on their website. Lastly, TFAP attempts to create a network of feminists and feminist artists by providing contact information for regional feminist art groups. 33 states and 6 countries are represented.

These four strategies ultimately create, or at least attempt to create and foster, a feminist art community.

Processing Note

The collection was received in two donations, in 2012 and 2018. Boxes 22-26 are the second accrual.
