Scope and Content Note

The Women's Studio Center Records contains documents produced by the Women's Studio Center mostly between 1998-2007. Founded in 1998, the Women's Studio Center was a non-profit art studio and writing room that provided individual studio space for visual artists and also organized workshops, classes, exhibitions and other events supporting and promoting visual arts and creative writing. The majority of the documents in the collection were produced by or addressed to Melissa Wolf, the founder of the Women's Studio Center, who also served as the Executive Director until the center closed on October 31, 2007.

The records in this collection consist mainly of the meeting minutes of the visual arts and writing committees, press clippings, institutionally produced exhibition materials, announcements, correspondence, grant applications, and print and digital photographs of works of art and Women's Studio Center events. The collection also contains a small amount of news clippings and announcements regarding local Long Island City art events.

Formats in the collection include printed documents, handwritten notes, compact discs, press clippings, and photographs. File formats of the documents compact discs include Adobe InDesign Documents (.indd), JPEGs, Microsoft Word documents (.doc), Microsoft Powerpoint presentations (.ppt), and PDFs.

The collection is arranged into nine series: CORRESPONDENCE, EVENTS & EXHIBITIONS, GRANTS, NEWSLETTERS & PUBLICATIONS, MINUTES, PRESS, ARTICLES & AND CLIPPINGS, PHOTOGRAPHS, and COMPACT DISKS.

Administrative History

Founded in 1998 by Melissa Wolf, the Women's Studio Center was a non-profit art studio and writing room that, through membership, provided individual studio space for visual artists. Members of the Women's Studio Center also organized workshops, classes, exhibitions and other events supporting and promoting visual arts and creative writing. The Women's Studio Center was initially located in Astoria, Queens and moved to the Wills Art Deco Building located Long Island City in the spring of 2001. Melissa Wolf served as the Executive Director from 1998 until the center closed on October 31, 2007.
