Letters and official documents (1896-1900), relating chiefly to the Spanish-American War; correspondence, notes, texts of speeches, and other papers relating to Frelinghuysen's political career, including papers (1920-1926) relating to coal and oil legislation; political newspaper clippings (1928-1929); records (1924-1936) of Rice Hope Plantation, near Charleston, S.C.; papers and genealogical records relating to the Frelinghuysen family; and personal and political scrapbooks (1889-1945). Among the correspondents represented by letters received is Herbert Hoover.

Biographical Sketch
FRELINGHUYSEN, Joseph Sherman (nephew of Frederick Theodore Frelinghuysen and cousin of Peter Flood Ballantine Frelinghuysen, Jr.), a Senator from New Jersey; born in Raritan, Somerset County, N. J., March 12, 1869; attended the public schools; interested in insurance companies; served in the Spanish-American War in 1898 as second lieutenant, first lieutenant, and ordnance officer; chairman of the Somerset County Republican executive committee 1902- 1905; member of the State senate 1906-1912; president of the senate in 1909 and 1910 and Acting Governor of New Jersey ad interim; member of the Republican State committee 1914- 1916; member of the New York Chamber of Commerce 1912-1926 and of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce 1914-1925; president of the State board of agriculture 1912-1925; president of the State board of education 1915-1919; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1917, to March 3, 1923; unsuccessful Republican candidate for re-election to the United States Senate in 1922; trustee of Rutgers College, New Brunswick, N. J., 1918-1928; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1916, 1920, 1921, 1928, 1936, and 1944; re-engaged in the insurance business until his death in Tucson, Ariz., where he had gone for his health, February 8, 1948; interment in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Bernardsville, N.
