Biographical Information

Gertrude N. Brick (1905-1995) was a lifelong resident of Crosswicks, Chesterfield Town-ship, Burlington County, New Jersey. She was educated in Philadelphia at the Ogontz School (graduated 1924) and at the School of Home Economics and Commerce (graduated 1941). A genealogist and antiquarian, she, like her parents before her, was active in various community groups in and near Crosswicks. For example, she served as president of the YWCA of Burlington County for some years and was involved in the formation of the Fort Dix Community Service, established during World War II to address various non-military needs of soldiers at Fort Dix. She was also active in the affairs of the Crosswicks Library Company. Included among her history-related activities was service as the chair of the Chesterfield Township Tercentenary Committee, as a founder (and life trustee) of the Chesterfield Township Historical Society and as the major player in the initial phases of preserving the Township' s early eighteenth century Singleton-Lathem-Large House.

Arrangement Note

The Gertrude N . Brick collection is arranged in two subgroups: 1) personal and family papers of Gertrude Brick (which also incorporates several small manuscript collections that she acquired) and 2) the Benners-Wilson-Bradley family papers, a collection three cubic feet in size which has been left with the Brick collection because miscellaneous papers or photographs of this family might remain interspersed in the personal and family papers of Gertrude Brick.

Other materials acquired with the Brick collection have been treated separately from the main collection. In addition, genealogical source materials gathered by Howard Deacon acquired with the Brick collection have been donated to the Genealogical Society of New Jersey. Finally, many books from Gertrude Brick's library have been incorporated into the Sinclair New Jersey Collection within Special Collections and University Archives.
