Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of about 500 limited edition fine and private press books comprising literature, poetry, bibliographies and works on private presses, typography and the graphic arts, most illustrated with wood engravings, lithographs or etchings. The collection includes imprints from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and Hungary. Materials mostly in English, German, French, Dutch and Czech.

Abstract

Arrangement Note

The works are arranged by country of publication. For the series Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark and France, arrangement within each country is by press or printer last name if available, otherwise by publisher. If a printer for illustrations was separately identified, the printer for the text was listed first, then the printer for the illustrations. For the series from Germany to the end of the finding aid, arrangement is by the element listed first in the inventory, be it publisher, author, illustrator or other descriptor.

Processing Note

The collection was donated by Brian Stilwell.

This collection has been minimally processed. An inventory provided by the donor was organized by country of publication, then by the most notable aspect of the work, including title, author, publisher or illustrator. This organization was retained for the series from Germany through to the end. For the Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark and France series, the organization was revised to a listing by press or printer, if available, or by publisher. Descriptive information was included in the inventory for each work, including illustrator, printer, and format, and frequently giving the date purchased and price of purchase. In preparing the inventory for the finding aid, purchase price information has been removed. Otherwise, the description and format that was in the original inventory was left intact, with minor formatting changes and spelling corrections.
