Dunham family papers

Dates

  • 1813-2003

Scope and Contents

Papers pertaining to burial sites of Dunham and related family members in Middlesex County, New Jersey, together with genealogical compilations relating to the family. The cemeteries represented are the Dunham Family Burying Ground (in present-day Edison Township); Willow Grove Cemetery (in New Brunswick); and Elmwood Cemetery (in North Brunswick Township).

The papers pertaining to the Dunham Family Burying Ground include a (recorded) deed, 1813, conveying the burying ground from one family member to another; a transcription of the 1813 deed; a 1932 map of the known burials with a number assigned to each; a reproduction of the map; and a [1932?] typed transcription (keyed to the map) of the gravestone inscriptions, including epitaphs. The map and transcription were prepared by Nelson Dunham (1893-1969) but are not so identified on the items.

The document pertaining to Willow Grove Cemetery is a deed, 1851, for two lots purchased by Andrew Linant, father-in-law of Nelson Dunham (1818-1885).

There are four items pertaining to Elmwood Cemetery: a deed, 1885, for two lots purchased by Elizabeth A. Dunham (1818-1901), spouse of Nelson Dunham (1818-1885); a contract, 1920, providing for perpetual care for the two lots purchased by Elizabeth A. Dunham; a deed, 1939, for part of a lot purchased by A. Frank Gilbert (1847-1945), father-in-law of Nelson Dunham (1893-1969) who was a grandson of Nelson Dunham (1818-1885); and a contract, 1939, providing for perpetual care for the partial lot purchased by Gilbert.

The genealogical compilations consist of a Gilbert line of descent (persons who lived in Connecticut and New York State) and a Dunham line of descent (persons who resided in Middlesex County from an early date). The latter lineage includes selected English antecedents. Both compilations have been edited slightly to mask information about living family members.
