Scope and Contents

Diary, 1859-1865, 1889 and 1891, and miscellaneous other papers of a teacher of Knowlton Township, Warren County, N.J. The diarist served terms as Knowlton Township's tax assessor and its superintendent of schools; he had previously conducted a school at Mt. Bethel (in Pennsylvania across the Delaware River from Knowlton Township). The diary consists of seven pocket volumes (which include some financial records and inserted papers) and is accompanied by a notebook (in part a commonplace book) that also incorporates a few January diary entries and other notations dated 1858.
