Scope and Contents
The collection consists of one box of materials related to the life of Joseph Bonaparte following his emigration to Bordentown, NJ. The bulk of the materials date from 1821 until 1848, though there is one folder consisting of receipts from 1867. Records found in the collection include real estate documents (including deeds and maps), account ledgers, Chancery Court cases, legal documents (including a printed version of Joseph's will), and correspondence.

Biographical / Historical
Joseph Bonaparte was the older brother Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of the French. Throughout his lifetime, Joseph served as King of Naples and King of Spain and the Indies (as Joseph I). Following the fall of Napoleon, Joseph emigrated to the United States and lived in Bordentown. He returned to Europe in 1832, though he sporadically visited his estate in Bordentown until 1939. He died in Italy in 1844.
