Scope and Contents
The first box in the collection contains two photo albums with plastic pages containing black-and-white photographs. The images are believed to represent primarily Cumberland County scenes (like Cohansey Light and Greenwich Piers Hotel), although most are unidentified and at least one image of Atlantic City is included. Attribution of the images in the first album to Garrison, a Cumberland County photographer, is based on the initials "E.B.G." written on the back of most of the prints (and "E.B. Garrison" on at least one of them); however, some of the prints (those formerly mounted in an album with black pages) may not be his, as they are labeled on the back as "Fairton album" and do not bear Garrison's initials. In addition, at least three of the images are labeled "from F.R.", which might or might not correspond to Frank H. Rehman. Dated images in the album (all corresponding to the "Fariton album" images) span the period 1913 to 1935, although the style of other photographs in the album suggests that some of the undated examples might have been created as early as the 1890s. A few of the images bear notations on the back which suggest that they had been published.
The second box in the collection contains eight photographs and an undated photo-finishing envelope with the name of the Cumberland County, N.J., photographer Emerson B. Garrison printed on it. Four of the images date from about 1900. They are mounted black-and-white prints (approximately 8 x 10) depicting the public area of a photographer's studio which is presumably that of Garrison himself. They were all at one time reproduced in an unidentified publication. A fifth image, also black-and-white, is a later reproduction of an oversize postcard (copyright 1907 by Garrison) which depicts the lakeside plant of the Millville Manufacturing Company. The remaining three photographs are later copies of panoramic photographic prints, copyrighted by Garrison, that depict High Street, Millville, N.J. as well as the Millville Manufacturing Company. The two photographs of the Millville Manufacturing Company plant are identical images.
