Scope and Contents
The David C. Wood records are comprised of one account book and one receipt book.
The account book is a record of materials supplied to Millville Furnace (owned initially, at least, by Smith & Wood together with James Lee) from the stock of, or ordered through, a store owned by Smith & Wood, together with a record of invoices for sales made by the Millville Furnace property.
The receipt book, a dos-a-dos volume, was kept largely or entirely in Philadelphia but pertains to all phases of Wood's activities, including his iron furnace and foundry in Cumberland County, N.J. From one end, the book records receipts resulting from court cases in which Wood was the defendant; however, the bulk of the entries are in a different sequence which begins at the other end of the volume. These receipts chiefly pertain to Wood's Philadelphia real estate, periodical subscriptions, store and counting room rental, several sloops, and the Millville Furnace. The furnace property entries, which date as late as 1845, primarily acknowledge payments made for materials delivered (e.g., hay, flour, ore, and patterns) and freight expenses (for selected deliveries and for the pig iron, castings, and pipe that were produced). Related entries pertain to ore that was shipped to Delaware. A few loose items (including receipts) are laid in the volume.
