Van Nuys Family papers

Dates

  • 1778 - 1870

Scope and Contents

One 1787-about 1790 ciphering book (incorporating a colored drawing) and one 1788-1793 penmanship copy book (in pieces), both of Peter Van Nuys; another ciphering book, likely from the 1780s; one 1836-1837 ciphering book and one 1837 penmanship book, both of James Q. Van Nuys; a 1790 letter; five sheets with handwritten verse; seven printed song sheets (likely Civil War-era and all published by J. Wrigley, New York); four cards with printed verse (presumably issued by a tract society); three printed leaves (with currency tables) from almanacs; and three items of a Peter N. Van Nuise: an undated reward of merit and two 1870 receipts for household furnishings purchased in New Brunswick. Per the donor's niece, the earlier persons represented are understood to have been from the Millstone or Six Mile Run area. Notations early in the Peter Van Nuys ciphering book suggest that he was born in 1775 and that his school master was Charles Gordon (who signed the 1790 letter).
