The Cooper, Hewitt and Company records are comprised of 3 boxes of letters received by the company between March 1853 and September 1862. The records are for an iron works and glue factory in Ringwood, NJ founded by Peter Cooper and Abram. Hewitt. Cooper was an industrialist, inventor, philanthropist, and politician best known for designing and building the first American steam locomotive. Hewitt, the son-in-law of Cooper, served as mayor of New York City from 1887-88 and was a Congressman for New York's 10th congressional district; he is also known for his influential work in the planning and construction of New York City's subway system.
