Scope and Contents
Papers of lawyer Alvah A. Clark of Somerville, Somerset County, N.J., consisting of letters received, miscellaneous financial documents and printed ephemera (announcements and appeals). The papers are most complete for the years 1906 and 1907. Represented are lawyers, other individuals, businesses, governments and organizations located primarily in Somerset County; however, some documentation originating from neighboring Hunterdon and Union Counties and farther afield is also present. Materials relating to Clark’s legal practice predominate, but his personal life is represented as well, including by letters received from his brother George. Also included are miscellaneous legal and personal papers, 1906-1907 and 1913-1914, of Clarence E. Case who served as Clark’s law partner for several years until 1910 and who reportedly used the same building as Clark following the latter’s death in late 1912. Clark’s and Case’s relationship is documented in the papers through letters they exchanged while one or the other of them was out of state. Additional correspondents represented include Alma White (a 1911 letter to Clark) and Joseph S. Frelinghuysen (1906-1907 letters to Case); among the several telegrams present is one from 1906 informing Case that he had passed the New Jersey bar exam.
