Scope and Contents
The Wynona Lipman papers consist of 6 bankers boxers of materials related to Lipman's tenure in the New Jersey State Senate. In 1972, Lipman became the first African-American woman to be elected to the Senate and served for 27 years until her death in 1999.
The collection is primarily comprised of correspondence and information on issues affecting Lipman's constituents in New Jersey during her time in the Senate, including education, retirement, tax relief, and abortion, among many others. Also included in these polticial papers is information on events and seminars attended by Lipman, personal diaries and notes, and press clippings and photocopies of articles on Lipman and the work she did.
